Edina High School Writers Block moves outside the classroom walls
New online conferencing offers a new way for students to get help with their writing
The Edina Education Fund is proud to play a role in supporting student learning throughout the district. Five years ago, the Edina Ed Fund provided a grant to Edina High School to open The Writers Block, a writing center staffed by English teachers and trained student writing coaches who work with fellow students in one-on-one conferences to help them improve their writing. This fall, in addition to in-person consultation sessions, EHS students have the option of receiving help with their writing assignments through online conferencing.
EHS English teachers, Martha Cosgrove and Beth Mohs coordinate the Writers Block and train the over 20 student-writing coaches who volunteer their time to work with their peers. The student coaches are trained in a variety of strategies to assist the writer with key techniques such as pre-writing, writing, revising and editing. Coaches work on a strictly confidential basis, and allow writers to remain in control of their work by leading the conferences focused on their questions and concerns.
Student writing coaches Naomi Reiner and Karl Otness came up with the idea of providing online coaching services. Using Google docs and a calendar on the writing center website, conferences can be scheduled in the evenings and on weekends.
The Edina Ed Fund continues to support and encourage inspiring ideas generated by teachers and staff. We look forward to continuing to partner with the Edina Public Schools to ensure all of our students have the opportunity for success.
